Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence: A Milestone for AECI’s Sulphuric Acid Plant: J-Plant
by AECI Industrial Chemicals | 2024-12-11
On 8th of November 2024, AECI Industrial Chemicals proudly commemorated a remarkable achievement—50 years of operation at our J sulphuric acid plant. This milestone represents more than just the passage of time; it embodies the hard work, dedication, and innovation that have driven our success in this vital sector.
The day was marked with a special ceremony that brought together key leadership, employees, and partners to reflect on our journey and look ahead to the future. The event was hosted by Siza Dimba, who served as the Master of Ceremonies, and featured speeches from AECI Group’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Denvor Govender, Vice President of Manufacturing & Physical supply chain Chemicals, Joe Frates, and Operations Manager, Kugen Govender as well as the vote of thanks from Operations Executive, Simphiwe Mazibuko.
A Legacy of Excellence
Since its inception, our sulphuric acid plant has played a crucial role in supporting AECI’s mission of providing innovative solutions for the chemical industry. The plant’s operations have evolved over the years to meet changing demands, adapt to new technologies, and uphold the highest standards of environmental stewardship and safety.
The plant’s history is a testament to the resilience of our workforce, the commitment of our leaders, and the strength of our company values. Over five decades, we’ve not only achieved operational milestones but have also built a reputation for reliability and excellence in the production of sulphuric acid, a key component in industries ranging from agriculture to manufacturing.
Acknowledging Long Service and Dedication
A highlight of the celebration was the recognition of employees who have been with the company for decades, contributing to the plant’s sustained success. Long Service Awards were presented to several individuals who have shown extraordinary dedication and loyalty to AECI.
These employees are the backbone of our success. Their deep knowledge, expertise, and commitment to operational excellence have been integral in achieving the high performance levels we celebrate today. Their contributions span from technical advancements to process improvements, and their work has paved the way for the future of our operations.
Navigating Change: The Turndown to Low Rates
Another significant aspect of the event was the plant's strategic shift towards low rates in recent years. As part of our ongoing efforts to optimize operations and improve sustainability, the plant has adapted to changing market conditions.
Our leaders outlined the importance of this transformation and how it aligns with AECI’s broader vision for the future. While the turndown to low rates presents challenges, it also opens new opportunities for innovation and efficiency. The plant is now better positioned to operate in a dynamic market while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.
A Vision for the Future
As we celebrate the past 50 years, we also look forward to the next 50 with optimism and excitement. Our focus remains on continuous improvement, sustainability, and enhancing the value we deliver to customers, employees, and communities. With a strong foundation and a forward-thinking approach, AECI’s sulphuric acid plant is well-equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities of the next half-century.
In closing, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who has been a part of this journey. Whether you’ve been with us from the beginning or have recently joined the team, your contribution has been vital to our success. Together, we will continue to build on this legacy and drive AECI towards an even brighter future.

To 50 years strong, and beyond!
From Umbogintwini’s soil in 1908, Where sulphur met fire, and history grew great, They built the first sulphuric acid plant, Turning the earth’s gifts into industry’s chant.
A century past, and the plant’s still here, Born from humble beginnings, forged year by year. From “Industrial Chemicals” to “Kynochem” pride, With logos in red, and then blue by its side.
“Akulu Marcon,” then “Chemical Initiatives” roared, And finally, as “AECI Industrial Chemicals” soared. With sulphuric acid for batteries and dyes, Keeping the spark in life’s curious ties.
Sulphur dioxide, in wine’s secret soul, Oleum—where chemicals and explosions roll. Downstream, aluminium sulphate serves water’s demand, In medicine, food, as a helping hand.
Umbogintwini’s workforce once two hundred strong, Through time’s many shifts, they’ve journeyed along. With improvements in process, engineering made new, DCS systems and maintenance that grew.
They turned down JPlant with precision and care, Managing shutdowns like a breath of fresh air. ISO standards, from quality to food, Each one a pledge to the trust they pursued.
Phakathi neminyaka engu-50 ye-J-Plant, sacwenga futhi sakhula, Kusukela kunhlansi yokuqala yesibabule kuya empumelelweni yanamuhla. I-AECI ime njengefa elitholekile, Ku-khemistri yezimboni, umlando wabo weminyaka engu-50 uyakhanya.
